Olive oil and Parthenon

"The myth of the olive tree and the goddess Athena".

According to ancient Greek mythology, the first olive tree in Athens was offered as a benefit to the people of Greece, by the goddess Athena who was the goddess of the power of purity, peace and wisdom. The first king of Athens in 3.000 BC. was Cecropas. So he decided according to the legend to give a name to the city. So he called two gods, Poseidon ( god of the sea) and Athena (goddess of wisdom and prosperity) and they meet on the hill of the acropolis, where Parthenon is today. He asked each one of them to make a gift to the city. He that would make the best offer would be the protector of the city and give to it his name. Poseidon strucked his trident on the earth and created a well with clean water. Athena strucked her spear in the earth and the tree of olive appeared.

Goddess Athena

The king of the city and people were impressed by the unknown tree. They understood that it would provide them the fruit for food, oil for food and health, the wood for various constructions and heating, and they decided that this was the best gift. This designated the goddess Athena as protector of their city which from then was named Athens.
Later in goddess Athena's honor, at the point where olive tree had first appeared, they built the Parthenon.
