The 95% of world production of olive oil is produced in the Mediterranean region. Of this, 93% is being producted by three countries, of which Greece is the third in production quantity (and globally), but the first in the production of extra virgin olive oil. The region's climate and soil composition of Mediterranean countries permit the development of the olive tree. Worldwide there are about 750 million trees.
Greece, which today is a small country, is the third in the world of oil production. The country has about 150 million olive trees and about 400,000 tons of oil are produced annually.
Of this 85% are extra virgin olive oil which means high quality, and in some greek areas reaches 90%.
That means that Greece is the first country in the world in production of extra virgin olive oil, when in other producing countries, this percentage ranges from 25-45%. |
